The chief minister, V S Achuthananthan starts speaking from the 27-28th second of the video. There are at two places the video is broken (cut). Even the question asked to him is NOT shown [UPDATE0: Imagine how a person will answer to a question like this - "Haven't Sandeep's father told you before that not even a dog should enter my house. Why did you go then?"]. In this attempt I am explaining a word-to-word translation and explanation of CM’s statements.
He Starts….[0:28 to 0:43]
<CUT>
The word-to-word translation,
Along with the Karnataka chief minister and his team…. or even before, the Kerala chief minister didn’t come… everyone from Kerala turned their back…. and he got over it…
The meaning,
Sandeep’s father got emotional over the fact that Kerala Chief minister or his representative couldn’t attend the funeral with or even before the Karnataka chief minister.
Kerala CM resumes speaking after the <CUT> [0:44-0:48]
<CUT>
The meaning,
Did the Karnatka CM had messaged anything to visit the home together?
The controversial part of the footage comes after the next <CUT> [0:49-end]
Word-to-word translation,
Had it not been Sandeep’s house, not even a dog would have glanced in. Sandeeps family, Sandeeps father, Sandeeps mother, Sandeeps family members, the attachment we have for them… that is very special, right? A soldiers father should have understood those?
Meaning,
Had it not been Sandeep’s house, not even a dog would have glanced in. The attachment we have with Sandeep’s family, Sandeep’s father, Sandeep’s mother, Sandeep’s family members is very special. A soldiers father should have understood those feelings.
Now, please tell me where he (Kerala CM) had insulted Major. Sandeep’s family?. Why ONLY the first sentence in his quote was colored and made in BOLD (in the footage)?
This is where I criticize the media of communist bashing! This is CHEATING! The TimesNOW had cheated ALL OF YOU!
The TimesNOW channel should publish the unedited footage of the interview if they have the minimal ethics/morals a journalist is expected to possess. It is so pity that the media is sensationalizing the issue just to score ahead in viewership by capitalizing the patriotic emotions of people.
I can understand it when non-Malayalam speaking friends criticize the CM, because they can ONLY swallow what TimesNOW says. Let me express by protest against my Malayalee friends who could understand Malayalam very well, consciously and will-fully became a part of this fact-hijacking footage by TimesNOW that too in the name of patriotism. Shame on YOU for capitalizing the fellow country-men’s patriotic emotions for satisfying your anti-communist needs.
FAQ
Q0. Karat had criticized CM’s remarks, CM had apologized and still what you are blabbering?
Their actions are completely political….just to save their face. My actions are completely personal, to expose the TRUTH, to explain MY STAND!… “I fear no DOGS”
Q1. Are you a Communist?
I am NOT a member of any of the main-stream left party and don’t wish to join, as of now, in the near future. But I am a staunch leftist.
Q2. So you blindly support CPI(M) or CPI for all their actions?
Read Q4. in this FAQ. (scroll down)
I wish if you could read Malayalam, so that you can read this beautiful post.
“May be patriotism is the adrenaline rush you get when watching the final overs of a 20-20 match for most of you… that is NOT the same for me and many others!“

[...] December 1, 2008 by pR@tz HOT UPDATE3: What (exactly) Kerala CM said? [...]
come on bro … believing in a political ideology or political party or even a political is not bad … but it does not mean that you should accept whatever bullshit they say ..
basic lesson that VS should learn
if you do not know how to speak English .. don’t do it … at least before the media … plzzzzzzz
iniyum naanamkeduthalle …
@dinu
how does your comment relate to the post? I ONLY meant that CM’s comments were misinterpreted by the non-Malayalam media… and the ONLY intention of this post is to translate VS remarks the correct way…
and VS was speaking in pure Malayalam when he spoke to TimesNOW (please watch the video)
I completely agree with you man. Even my first reaction when I first heard this was that, his (CM’s) reaction was quite right. When a person of his calibre and stature is visiting one’s house, it would be grossly inappropriate ( more so for a major’s father) to give out his emotions.
Our CM’s personality is well known within the state and what happened in the interview afterwards is pure Sensationalisation. It is just playing on the patriotic fervour on the people. I can surely say that, if anyone is patriotic enough, that’s our CM.
So much for another idiotic controversy.
Indiakk vendi poruthi maricha Major Sandeep Unnikrishnante rakthasakshitham polum anavashya vivadangalilek valichizhakkan nammude pathrangal kanicha avesham enthu kondum Indiakkum Major Sandeepinum apamanam varuthi ennathil samshayamilla. Good job Pratheesh !
I really think both VS and Mr. Unnikrishnan fell for a trap set by the media. The CM had contacted Mr. Unnikrishnan on phone the morning after Maj Sandeep’s cremation and Unnikrishnan reportedly was friendly to the CM then.
The media, after blowing things out of proportion, went with cameras and waited for a regrettable scene to happen at a mentally disturbed Unnikrishnan’s home. The issue of sniffer dogs at Sandeep’s home too was unjustly pinned on to VS, while it was actually the Karnataka State Police that did the security checking as per protocols.
Nonetheless, being a man of immense political experience, VS should have exercised much care in speaking to the media and should have known better to desist from colloquial usages (which has now done the damage) that could be interpreted in a thousand way.
I wish Times Now released the original unedited version of the controversial interview .
I saw the video.Sandeep was the one n only son of his
parents. His father must be mentally destroyed during that
period.He is a major’s father.Apart from that he is a father
who loved his son deeply.Seeing his dead body what was
his feeling.Anyone thought about that. How can one chief
minister speak like this? What is the blame on his father. His
son died for our country not for any party? Is this actually
the prob??He even dont have any sense.Even if thats not
Sandeep’s house a lot of good people must have went
there other than these BARKING DOGS.V S will come to
know the pain if he is lucky to see his son’s dead body. But
i dont wish so.Becoz any parent cant bear the pain. And
how can u people justify him?? The media will
celebrate.Thats for sure. But who is responsible for that??
Sandeeps father. He didnt call any press meeting till VS
made this comment.Can u blame him??Rubbish…Shame on
u people. If he was ur brother then also u will do the
same??
So this is not an idiotic controversy. This is a controversy
created by an idiot. Please dont tell about his
personality. He is an ordinary CM.The only thing that
seperates him from others is his senseless speech..He
didnt succed in any of his missions. We are not mad to
expect also.Actually his post is only an old man’s last wish.
@ achu, shafi & suraj
thanks for the comments
@ dev
the point here is… did CM abuse/disrespect Major. Sandeep or his family…. the answer is NO!….
I have written something similar in my blog and I felt impotent rage in the way people could be so easily fooled, a man’ reputation torn to shreds forcibly made to apologize for no mistake of his. Times Now and Headlines Today are the culprit. I am no fan of V.S. Yet I think he and the whole nation are the victims of an hoax and something should be done to bring such reporters and news editors to book. Only Asianet showed what truly happened. It is a pity that V.S is not aware that the whole upper-middle class and their favorite channels are out looking for a chance to bury the Left. He is giving them too many opportunities.
Media often takes quotes out of context. Nothing much there is to be done about that. If they did that to Bush, then you can bet that they will do that to our CM as well.
Well…I never believe in the ‘purity’ of news reports in India..I have seen that while news papers and channels reported the political murder happed in my college hostel..
The same impurity is present in any news reports,if it is within India or international media like CNN or BBC.
When it comes to TimesNow and all,its more based on ‘marketing the news’..They show what people would like to hear and see(There was a magazine called FIRE which did it for all those like to think bit nasty)..
The best thing to do is ‘ignore those’..Not even try to explain, think on that..
The emotional, ethical aspects involved here has to be noted for sure.. The emotion filled responses/comments from CM and soliders father, has to be neglected/ignored as they are human beings bound to go insensible under emotions.

whatever be the meanings u are trying to interpret
A barrage of rhetoric here again. Leaders essentially need not speak English. He spoke English because he was questioned by the English media who were present there. Otherwise VS would have replied in lucid malayalam to any of the questions posed at him. I think he is more proud than any of these whimpering neo-rich mallus who are trying to gauge his education and his prowess in English. Get lost, is all i can say.
Now, the wordings of what he told is a bit controversial but no where has he insulted the dead Major. As an elected representative who is the CM of kerala he had to visit Major’s house and so he did. There an inebriated father of the Major was showering abuses on CM ,the home minister and created an unwarranted scence.
Let me tell you, this scene has got lot to do with the slimy journalism many of our mainstream media is carrying out. This time around the rich and the affluent are seriously scared after “their” icons Taj and Oberoi were attacked. They flocked on to the TV screens and wheezed and in one stretch of their breath berated all the politicians and media has been able to propel this feeling a bit too far time around and it was by cashing in on the anger the people felt after the macabre attack in Mumbai. For the rich; politicians are dancing buffoons, today they will lash them.. tomorrow they will be in their laps.
Now some senseless, ignorant and stupid people do get brainwashed by these acts and they are unnecessarily blowing up an issue while the news channels are making hay while the sun shines. They are badly trying to push their TRP rating by cashing in the anger of the people and the fuming nationalism. Somehow we seems to have found a long lost love for all our jawans and Majors.
How many of us were in public supporting the Jawans when they asked for a pay rise? Did we have to wait till a Mumbai Massacre and an Achuthananthan for recognizing and awarding them? Didnt we have to support and pay them well, earlier?
These people who are now creating a ruckus over this issue are those who should not be taken in to account as you people seem to be bothered about all this when situation arises. Where were you all before? Afterall there are umpteen number of unjust things happen in our society… where are you people? If some silly media needs to instigate and invoke your true spirits, your spirits will die soon too.
Hi all,
These channels are keeping no stones unturned in its pursuit to sell news….cheap news…Both parties can’t be blamed here….
the major’s father in first case would have been in an inexplicable frame of mind…but still i wonder was his son’s bereavement less painful..than realising that kerala CM has not come…he reacted that way only…
On the other side Kerala CM does not sit in Banglore….It is heartening that he went to meet the parents…He is THE CM OF A STATE..not a man who can keep away his duty at short notice and attend any functions….his entire life is charted…he cant run away from all the commitments…
Inspite of his schedule…the fact that he had the heart to visit them should be aknowledged…..
and one small advice friends….Dont buy the scrap these media guys sell….They play into our mind knowing that every human being gets excited when somebody, especially a very famous guy (Cinestars politicians..in this case our CM) is criticised….they are taking toll of our weakness….dont believe what they show……lets have our own opinions and our own viewpoint of the world..rather than borrowing somebody else’s
Pardon me if I have hurted anybody with my comments..it is only my thought….
well,,, does dat mean dat am showin some common sense deficiency syndrome…
n for ur kind information,,, i hv gt nothng against the communist party…
n i did feel dat they way he behaved at Sandeep’s home was maturish enough…
but had he replied to the media (for “ഒരു പട്ടി പോലും എന്റെ വീട്ടില് കയറണ്ടാ എന്ന പരമാര്ശത്തിന് താങ്കള് എന്ത് മറുപടി പറയുന്നു”) sumthng like “അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അപ്പോഴത്തെ മാനസികാവസ്ത മനസിലാക്കാവുന്നതാണ്… “, there would not have been such a fuss about it….
the point is ppl interpret things differently….
u wouldn’t hav seen anything wrong with cm’s statements, n neither did i except for that single statement (“പട്ടി പ്രയോഗം”)
and i suppose dat is the case wid many others too…

Initially, is it a consitutional precedent that the head of state or head of nation should visit the home of our security men who dies on duty for the sake of the country. Hence I feel that such visits can only be construed as personal. The better logic would be that all Indians who lay down their lives for the security of the country should be considered as martyrs. In the present case the CM had phoned up the major’s home and expressed his condolences to the bereaved family. Later when irresponsible and trouble makers & nefarious elements hooked him up for not paying a visit to the major’s home, he rushed. And when he reached the home, he was told to get out, abused and humiliated in front of public glare and the media. Back home the reckless media confronted him on the issue and he retorted with a remark which was cunninngly twisted by the bourgeois press backed by the mafia barons and the defunct Congress and BJP. However the popular standing or rating of India’s most practical and wise CM will not go down either. Mr. V.S Achuthanandan is known for him simplicity, humbleness and down to earth personality. The bourgeois media, the TV channels have given a wrong impression to Keralites and Indians world wide on this issue. nevertheless, Mr. V.S has the backing of secular, progressive and the working class of Kerala. Under his rule all corrupt elements in the soceity – the bureaucrats , the religious outfits, land encroachers have been exposed and apprehended. There is a better law and order situation in the state when compared to all the other bigger states in India. Major Sandeep was a brave commando who was adventurous to defeat his enemies. The CM, his party the Communist Party of India ( Marxist ) pays rich tributes for his bravery. Hence all the critics and detractors of the CM or his party can stop barking like stray dogs
Well..there is a story abt media..
Wen the Pop went to Las Vegas, immediately after the arrival, in the airport itself, the media persons there asked him wat is his openion abt night clubs @ Las..
He replied(rather being surprised!) ‘is there any night clubs here @ Las’ ?
The next day, news paper headlines read
‘Immediately after the arrival, pop asked is there any night clubs here @ Las’

pratheesh,
It is not the words, but the actions that are to be noticed. when he says that he has attachment towards the family, he is just expressing it in words. But how does he prove that he has attachment, he should have done something. He did not even bother to offer condolences until the media pointed out that he failed to do so. If he really had any attachment towards him and his family (quoting the red bold words), he should have been the first one to offer condolences and not the last one to fly in for namesake and do all this drama.
I accept that you believe in his or his party’s ideologies, but you should also have an open mind to separate out the right and wrong things done by them.
If you still do not agree, please explain what he has done which actually proves that everyone will understand he is so attached to that family, rather than quoting some words.
-Neethu
@ Neethu
But how does he prove that he has attachment, he should have done something. He did not even bother to offer condolences until the media pointed out that he failed to do so.
You are misled by the media. If you see VS’s explanations in “The Hindu”, you will understand that VS had called up his political secretary the moment he came to know about Major. Sandeep’s death, en route Delhi.
He had also called Major’s father Mr. Unnikrishnan during the PB meeting, and had assured that he (VS) will be coming to meet the family the very next day.
In the mean time, media and opposition in Kerala was spreading news that Kerala government had neglected Major. Sandeep.
The next day CM and home minister had directly flown to Bangalore from Delhi to meet slain Major’s family and the unfortunate happened.
And the media (the opposition and mislead YOU) termed his visit as “political drama”. Now, see how the Communist government’s actions were termed by bourgeoisie media.
(1) When there was a bit delay in meeting Unnikrishnan family it was “Negligence of Kerala Government”
(2) When CM and VS met them, it was “out of media/opposition pressure” and “cheap political drama”
(3) Then when CM’s quotes were taken out of context and misinterpreted it was “disrespecting the dead”
If you had read CM’s explanations and from a non-corrupt media, like “The Hindu” you wouldn’t have had this misunderstanding.
I accept that you believe in his or his party’s ideologies, but you should also have an open mind to separate out the right and wrong things done by them.
I have an FAQ for you, read Q4 in that post (scroll down).
This whole controversy was created by media and it was made deliberately to tarnish, the already weak image of politicians . We all should criticize politicians, but this is making much ado about nothing. Mind that politicians are a part of the system that we all live. If we want politicians to be good and perfect, we all has to be good and perfect first. Cream of the society should enter politics, instead of going to the US and make a living there.
Now I understand why the neo-rich Achuthanandan and his people have come to power. God save us! God save Kerala!
[...] ONLY interested in sensationalizing news there by increasing their reader/viewer-ship ratings. In my last post I have posted how Kerala CM, V S Achuthananthan’s comments were misinterpreted consciously to [...]
hmm…I still dont understand what was the use of using the ‘patti’ prayogam in it..assuming I trust ur explanation that his intentions were right..He could have avoided that sentence…
Even CM’s are not beyond emotions..he must have said it in his emotional turbulence..but,the fact is when the whole world is watching over an issue like this, it demanded decorum and sadly he did lose it…
I felt bad hearing it…then I can imagine how family members of sandeep must have felt…
Wouldn’t it be prudent to tell that our CM has fallen too easily into the trap set by the media? How apt is it to use such a term on national media under the circumstances? Sure he is no ordinary layman talking to shoppers in a market…A CM is supposed to use a bit more polished language when the spotlight is on him..
But nice post what-so-ever.:)
The sour fact remains that VS has only himself to thank for all these troubles..
Achuthanandan as a politician is one among the very few of them in Indian politics, who has a higher moral ground. As a chief minister and as a public personality, he is not in company with goons and extortionists as it goes with the contemporary leaders in some states and with some in Kerala. He is not in liaison with rogue elements in society and has always stood up to voice his concerns for the common man.
Now as a machinery the actions of the government in kerala is dictated by other people in the party who tends to have a leaning towards these nefarious elements by which they are crippling the powers of Achuthanandan
Achuthanandan is the worse leader ever. Kick him out. Plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
